Innovation, Value and Cost Containment in Shoulder Arthroplasty

Dear Colleagues:

I am happy to share with you an article on the above topic, as I think the data within is not something many have seen before. While we focus on shoulder arthroplasty (as we are shoulder surgeons), the same considerations have been applied to other areas in orthopedics.

The current economic climate is very much focused on cost containment, but this must be viewed through the lens of many stakeholders in the episode of shoulder arthroplasty, including patients, surgeons, hospital administrators, implant vendors, and insurance companies.

A Google search with the term “value in orthopedic surgery” yields 21 million posts, and a search in Pubmed.gov yields just over 37,000 academic publications, most of which have been completed in the last 3 years (see below):

Value in Orthopedics abstract on pubmed.gov

So, there is great interest in the concept(s) of value. The article enclosed considers value of shoulder arthroplasty from many perspectives so there is something for all stakeholders. Let us know what you think either on our post on LinkedIn or in our WhatsApp group chat.

Kind Regards,
